The question

In all your responses to some earlier questions, you stated the best thing is to switch programs(into cycles) I am currently in week 2 the 5 day strength/training. I will want to switch to bodybuilding program to gain some mass after 4 or five weeks. Where do I pick up in that phase(bodybuilding)week 1? or week 5? Then after that I will want to lean out. What should I do?

Dan's answer

Dan Wirth, MA, CSCS

Hello, If you have "major" goals like strength development, mass development or leaning out you will need to spend at least 6 weeks in each particular phase of training. When you see some of my responses about specific cycling of programs most of them will be 12 week cycles. A yearly program would look something like this: 12 weeks on the 4 Day Bodybuilding Mass Express Cycle, 12 weeks on the 5 Day Strength and Power Cycle, 6 weeks on the 3 Day Get Lean Cycle, 6 weeks on the 4 Day Strength and Power Express, 12 Weeks on the 5 Day Bodybuilding Mass Cycle. You don't want to do a Strength and Power program for 5 weeks, then the Bodybuilding program for 6 weeks, then the Get Lean program for 6 weeks etc. Cycling your programs like this is not a bad thing it's just not the best thing\! You simply need to spend more time working on a particular goal in order to maximize your results. If you do switch out a program cycle after 6 weeks, start the next program on week 7\! Thanks for your question. Don't eat too much candy\!

- [I hope you are fine. This WebSite have helped me a lot. I just have one question. If dont do my workout one day...can I do it next day combine it with the workout for that day? thanks](https://www.workoutsmart.com/ask-dan/weight-training/i-hope-you-are-fine/1753)
- [I've been using your programs for about a year, and have seen some results. A problem I've been having lately is on some exercises with a large \# of reps (ex. 3 sets, 20 reps, 15 reps, 10 reps), I can handle the weight, but I cannot do the full \# of reps in a set without resting for a minute or so. So, to complete an exercise, instead of doing 20,15,10; I end up doing 10,10,10,5,10. Is this what I should be doing, or should I lower the weight and do the complete sets with no rest? I feel I can easily handle the weight for the 1st 10 or so reps of each set, but then it is impossible to continue without rest. After the rest, I have no problem handling the weight for the remainder of the set.](https://www.workoutsmart.com/ask-dan/weight-training/ive-been-using-your-programs/1542)

- [I recently completed the 4 day a week S and P with olympics program. I am 25 years old now and have been lifting since I was in high school and I can say with confidence that it is the most productive program I have ever participated in. I have always been a big believer in periodization and multiple set training but at times I have found the amount of different approaches to be a bit overwhelming. Your website has taken much of the guess work out of my workouts and I am very grateful. I have told all of my friends about your awesome service. My question has to do with progressive overload. In programs I have experimented with in the past ( for example a russian power cycle) the three major lifts bench squat and clean over a period of several weeks progress to say two reps of two at about 105% of max whereas in your programs no sets are done with weights much above 95% of max. Why is this? Believe me I have no complaints, like I said before I had tremendous success with your program I just find the science of periodization interesting and I am always trying to understand it better. My second question is why doesn't the s and p programs allow you to exchange lat pulls with chinups. I find chin ups much more effective for me and I would like really like to have this option. I have noticed in your football programs that chinups are actually the excercise most stressed for the upper back. Thank you again for your service, I lost 15 pounds of bodyweight and gained about fifteen percent on the three big lifts in just twelve weeks.
